Job Description

Pow is searching for a fermentation lead for our Intelligent Fermentation platform. You will work on a small team, designing and executing fermentations in various microbial organisms. The ideal candidate will have experience in microbial fermentation at bench and pilot scale, be a creative thinker, and solver of hard problems.

  • Development of (fed)batch and continuous fermentation processes using scale-down model to predict and optimize pilot-scale fermentation processes.
  • Development of fermentation and downstream processes for a variety of microbes and products.
  • Lead scale-up and tech transfer to research collaborators, including troubleshooting and process development, and process improvements.
  • Build and implement automated processes to improve fermentation operations workflows in (fed)batch and continuous fermenters.
  • Identify and apply new process technologies and strategies to optimize fermentation workflows.

Desired skills

  • BS, MS, or PhD in bioengineering, chemical engineering, microbiology or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years of industry experience
  • Good communication skills, both internally and with external clients.
  • Ability to work in a small team, fast pace, with all the excitement and uncertainty that can accompany a startup experience.
  • Hands-on experience in operating lab and pilot scale fermenters and fermentation processes
  • Hands-on experience with DSP equipment, e.g. clarifiers, MF, UF.
  • Strong knowledge of microbiology, microbial physiology, and cellular metabolism.
  • Ability to understand and design seed trains.
  • Experience with python, grafana, and JMP.
  • Experience using design of experiment (DoE) methodology for optimization and characterization of fermentation processes
  • Understanding of statistical methods for data analysis and visualization, as well as automated numerical methods for analysis.
  • Process control methodologies, including knowledge of QBD.
  • Automation control, including instrument communication, and databases (SQL or influx). PID understanding a big plus.

Month: Run your first bench and pilot scale fermentations. Design experiments and construct fermentation dashboards.

Year: Grow with a growing team. Mentor junior scientists and interns. Learn new techniques and skills: lab, data, and people-based. Prepare presentations and documents for partners and prospective investors. Assist in building out a new lab and in hiring new team members.
